Located in Horsens Fjord in the Kystlandet region of Denmark, the picturesque island of Alro provides a perfect resting place for the traveller seeking a bit of peace and quiet. Alro Island is a hidden gem, often overlooked by tourists in favour of its more popular neighbours.

The atmosphere is calm and you can experience beautiful nature and the most delicious food. The island is 7.7 square kilometres and you can walk, cycle or drive there. Alrø has been inhabited since the Stone Age and it is still possible to find stone age tools here. The island is particularly popular among nature and kite surfing enthusiasts.

From there, a short ferry ride takes you to the island, where you'll be greeted by its gentle, rolling landscapes and welcoming locals. We took the The Alrø-Hjarnø bicycle ferry from the neighbouring island of Hjorno.

We enjoyed a truly wonderful lunch at lunch at Alrø Købmagergaard - where we were able to enjoy a locally reared bison burger and mouth-watering tapas. At Alrø Købmandsgaard, the bison meat is from the restaurants own herd farmed nearby on the island.
