Tunisia - a brief tour to the south

Tunisia - a brief tour to the south

If you're looking for an exotic getaway from the grey spring weather of Northern Europe, Tunisia might just be the perfect destination for you. With less than three hours of flying time from the UK, Tunisia offers a wide range of landscapes, from sand to salt to stony deserts, making it an ideal destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

Tunisia is not just about the massive Mediterranean resorts located up and down the central coast. In recent years, Tunisia has come of age and is now offering boutique-style hotels in some of its lesser-known resorts, making it a unique and affordable destination for travellers.

Djerba

One of the best places to visit in Tunisia is the flat island of Djerba, where you can experience colorful markets in the main town of Houmt Souk, with its dazzling and piquant flavorings at the spice market. Stay at the exquisite “boutique” hotel, Dar Dhiafa, a rabbit warren of ancient buildings surrounding endless courtyards, offering a mix of Djerban specialties prepared with a French spin.

Tataouine

For those seeking an adventure, head south to the desert. You'll cross the long low causeway that links Djerba with the mainland and travel in a big four-wheel drive through the amazing salt pan deserts. Then, you'll enter a mountainous district and the hot but vibrant town of Tataouine, where you can explore the genuine North African souk at the market, climb the lesser-known Ksar Debbab and the Berber village of Douiret, and see black Berber tents and beautiful sky blue clothes wafting on washing lines amid the cliffs.

Ksar Ghilane

Finally, you'll see what you’ve travelled thousands of miles to observe - a vast ocean of dunes. Ksar Ghilane, an oasis in the middle of the desert, offers several tented camps run by various tour operators as sort of romantic hotels where you can live the dream of desert life. After a long camel ride across the dunes to visit some lost and ancient fort, enjoy a traditional meal cooked by Berber people under the stars in an open nomad’s tent.

After such an experience, chill out for a while by the sea at the family-run Residence Soltana at Zarzis, set in walled gardens of great beauty.

Tunisia is an inexpensive yet breathtaking destination, and you can stay at Dar Dhiafa in Djerba, Pansea Tented Camp, or Residence Soltana for reasonable prices. For more information, contact the Tunisian National Tourist Office or visit their website.

Whether you're seeking adventure or relaxation, Tunisia is the perfect destination for you. Book your trip now and experience the magic of this exotic North African country for yourself.
